Good afternoon, dear teachers and friends!

I' m happy to make a speech here. Thank you for your coming. Now, the topicfor my speech today is “Western Festivals.” I would like to talk aboutChristmas.

Christmas is originally a Christian festival, as you can see from theformation of this word, “Christ-mas.” The first part of the word refers to JesusChrist, and the second part “mas” comes from the word “mass,” referring to amain religious ceremony in some Christian churches. At first, it was celebratedfor the birth of Jesus Christ. Nowadays, although some churches still observethis festival for its religious reason, for most people, including Chinesepeople, Christmas has already become a day of secular celebrations, when peopleexchange greetings and gifts. However, it is still a biggest festival in theWest. It is as important to the Westerners as the Spring Festival is to theChinese people.

Christmas day is on the 25th of December, and Christmas Eve is of coursethe evening of the previous day, the 24th December.

Christmas holiday usually lasts for two weeks, during which most schoolshave a Christmas break. Many families put the Christmas tree in their house, andhang many decorations on the tree. Under the tree, they usually place manyChristmas presents. Giving out presents and receiving presents are what kidslike best about this festival.

On Christmas Eve, kids would put stockings at the end of their bed, wishingthe Santa Claus would come and give them presents.

As to the tradition of giving and receiving presents in Christmas, I thinkit has something to do with the nativity story. In the nativity story, on thebirthday of baby Jesus, there was a bright star shining in the East. There werethree kings in the East who saw the star, and they followed the star all the wayto Bethlehem where the star stopped. They came to a manger where baby Jesus waslying. They worshiped the little baby and gave him presents. I think this is abeautiful story. It shows a spirit of sharing and love.

I like Christmas for the presents kids will receive and for its lovelystory.

Thank you very much!

Chinese New Year is the most important festivity for the Chinese people. Itis also called the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year.

Every year has an animal’s name. These animals are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. A Chineselegend says that these twelve animals had a race. The first year was named afterthe rat, the winner. The other eleven years were named after the order in whichthe animals arrived in the race. The clever rat jumped onto the ox’s back thenat the end jumped over the ox’s head to arrive first!

The Chinese believe that a person born in a particular year has some of thecharacteristics of animal.

On Chinese New Year’s Eve all family members enjoy a big, delicious meal.It is very important for the Chinese to be with their families on this occasion.Fish is always part of the dinner because it represents abundance.

On New Year’s Day all Chinese children wear new clothes with bright colors.Red is considered a lucky color. Parents and relatives give children thetraditional New Year’s gift called lucky money. This money is put into brightred and gold envelopes. Fill under the pillow. in the morning of new year , thekid wakes up to see the “lucky money”, express that oneself become one yearolder. Red is a traditional color for festivals, celebrations, weddings andbirthdays.

The lion dancers are always part of the festivities. The lion has a bighead and long body made of cloth. The lion dance is accompanied by drums, cymbals and noisy firecrackers. According to ancient traditions the great noisefrightens away evil spirits.

The dragon is the most important figure of the Chinese New Year festivitiesand parades. The dragon is considered a lucky figure. A parade dragon can be 20to 30 meters long! Sixty or more men move under a long cloth that represents thedragon’s tail.

During the parade children represent the animals of the Chinese calendar. There are also acrobats and musicians in beautiful costumes.

How well are we in tune with the rhythm of life? In our busy day to day existence, we don’t often stop to ask ourselves this question. At least I don’t. And it wasn’t until I joined a competitive sporting event that I learned a most important lesson – we must place our mind in harmony with the natural order of things to be successful.

Let me tell you what happened.

I decided to take part in an International Marathon in my hometown last year. Being an ambitious person, I hoped to finish it within 5 hours, accompanied by my friend with whom I had trained.

The big day finally arrived. "Ready...set...bang" And we were off.

At first, we kept a rapid pace and ran nonstop. At this pace, we finished the first 20 kilometers in 2 hours and I thought running a marathon was a piece of cake. Then my running mate began to slow down. I urged him to keep running at the same pace but he said no, he wanted to conserve his energy. I felt I had partnered with the wrong person, therefore, I sprinted on and left him behind in the dust.

A few kilometers later, I began to understand his strategy as my pace slowed to a jog then a walk. After that I was incapable of moving another step. I was humiliated as more and more people ran passed me. More than once I thought "Maybe I should quit." I started to doubt my ability to finish this race.

At this moment, my running mate caught up with me and slapped me on the back. “Follow me,” he shouted. He had balanced his marathon pace and was encouraged me to do the same. For the rest of this grueling contest, we walked, jogged, ran a few miles, and walked again. Slowly, painfully but hopefully this time, we established the most suitable pace within the natural flow of our physical capabilities.

Eventually we accomplished our first Marathon of 42 kilometers in 4 and half hours. I asked myself, what did this marathon mean to me? My Marathon experience became an influential metaphor for my life about how we must learn to pace ourselves in everything, by being in tune with the rhythm of life.

Like the tide that ebbs and flows, we must listen to advice but make our own decisions. Like the show at dawn and dusk, we must learn to balance pride and modesty. And from the way the wind can both shout and whisper, we must learn when to be strong and when to be gentle, for everything moves in its own rhythm and its own yin and yang elements. It is the interaction of these complementary extremes that produces harmony, as Laozi said, extremes meet. Since the marathon, this notion of two opposite forces working together has been my running partner, so to speak. Yin and yang exist everywhere, constantly interacting, and never existing in an absolute condition.

Ladies and Gentlemen, life is like running a marathon, let us discover, define and develop a natural rhythm of life, in order to achieve both harmony and success.

Thank you for listening.

Dear Judges and Friends,

The topic for my speech today is “Festival.” I would like to talk about my favorite festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival.

In China we have several important festivals, such as the Spring Festival, the Lantern Festival, the Dragon-boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. Among them, I like Mid-Autumn festival best, especially because I live in Xiamen.

In Xiamen, when we celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival, we do not only follow the common practices such as having a big dinner party with our family, eating mooncakes, and appreciating the full moon at night, we also have one unique custom which is only practiced in Xiamen, that is “Bo Bing”.

“Bo Bing” is a very interesting game that almost all Xiamen people play during this festival. Usually family members or close friends get together around a table with a big round bowl in the middle and six dices in the bowl. We take turns to throw the dices into the bowl. We will get different prizes accroding to the different ways the dices show their upper sides. Everyone is likely to become the champion or “Zhuangyuan” for the year. There is an element of luck and equal opportunity in this game. So people usually get excited while playing. Also, the game gives very pleasant sounds. The tinkling made by the dices falling into the bowl is pleasant, people’s laughing, cheering and applauding for the big prizes they’ve won is pleasant. All this adds greatly to the joyful atmosphere of this festival. As a kid, of course I also like the material prizes I get from the game, such as a candy or a cake.

In this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, my family invited our foreign friends to come to our home to celebrate the Festival together. They have two children who are younger than me. While our parents were making Jiaozi together, we kids played “Bo Bing”. We bought quite some gifts to share with our guests as their prizes. They enjoyed the game and our get-together very much.

The literal translation of “Bo Bing” is “mooncake gambling.” But actually it is not gambling, at least our family never plays it that way. For us, it is more an occasion of happy sharing and getting-together. This is why Xiamen’s Mid-Autumn Festival has become my favorite festival in the year.

Thank you very much!

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

Today I would like to talk about current environment situations which youcan see all over the world. While we are pursuing better ways of lives, moreproblems we are also making. Sometimes we only notice a unilateral aspect of thematter while ignoring its various functions. This kind of negligence, however, may cause serious problems that could be devastating.

It is said that one false move may lose the game. This is proved in ourdaily life obviously. As the economy is growing rapidly day after day, manufacturers are looking for more opportunities to gain numerous profit. Toearn more money, one way is to decrease the cost of the products. They movetheir factories to developing countries which can not only benefit them muchmore profit than before, but also those countries welcome them since they canhelp increase the countries’ GDP.

While it seems we can gain a lot from building factories to produceproducts, the shortcomings of these buildings are becoming obvious. Though atthe beginning, those developing countries did gain a lot of profit. As timepasses, people living surround the factories deposit industrial waste into theriver which directly leads to the influence of human’s lives. Fish died, birdsdisappeared, people moved, and we couldn’t imagine what would come next. Theseindustries also use lots of resources to carry on their production. Largeamounts of carbon dioxide are discharged, we all know the consequence of that, global warming—as one of the most essential environmental problems in the world,is becoming more and more serious currently. That the local government ignoredwas that these factories damaged their environment without any punishment butreception! They didn’t notice the negative aspect on this investment. What apity!

In summary, nowadays, businessmen are destroying our motherland—earth forthemselves. What should we do in this situation? Ignore them or try to take someactions on it? I believe all of us will choose the latter, right? So just do it,nothing is impossible.

That’s all. Thank you.
