Yet the vows of this Nation can only be fulfilled if we in this Nation are first, and, therefore, we intend to be first. In short, our leadership in science and industry, our hopes for peace and security, our obligations to ourselves as well as others, all require us to make this effort, to solve these mysteries, to solve them for the good of all men, and to become the world's leading space-faring nation.
We set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained, and new rights to be won, and they must be won and used for the progress of all people. For space science, like nuclear science and all technology, has no conscience of its own. Whether it will become a force for good or ill depends on man, and only if the United States occupies a position of pre-eminence can we help decide whether this new ocean will be a sea of peace or a new terrifying theater of war. I do not say that we should or will go unprotected against the hostile misuse of space any more than we go unprotected against the hostile use of land or sea, but I do say that space can be explored and mastered without feeding the fires of war, without repeating the mistakes that man has made in extending his writ around this globe of ours.
There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation many never come again. But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas?
We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.
It is for these reasons that I regard the decision last year to shift our efforts in space from low to high gear as among the most important decisions that will be made during my incumbency in the office of the Presidency.
In the last 24 hours we have seen facilities now being created for the greatest and most complex exploration in man's history. We have felt the ground shake and the air shattered by the testing of a Saturn C-1 booster rocket, many times as powerful as the Atlas which launched John Glenn, generating power equivalent to 10,000 automobiles with their accelerators on the floor. We have seen the site where five F-1 rocket engines, each one as powerful as all eight engines of the Saturn combined, will be clustered together to make the advanced Saturn missile, assembled in a new building to be built at Cape Canaveral as tall as a 48 story structure, as wide as a city block, and as long as two lengths of this field.
Within these last 19 months at least 45 satellites have circled the earth. Some 40 of them were made in the United States of America and they were far more sophisticated and supplied far more knowledge to the people of the world than those of the Soviet Union.
The Mariner spacecraft now on its way to Venus is the most intricate instrument in the history of space science. The accuracy of that shot is comparable to firing a missile from Cape Canaveral and dropping it in this stadium between the 40-yard lines.
Transit satellites are helping our ships at sea to steer a safer course. Tiros satellites have given us unprecedented warnings of hurricanes and storms, and will do the same for forest fires and icebergs.

Over the past couple of years, several cases of the food scandal have been disclosed on various media. The problem of food security has become a hot button across society. The prevalence of food insecurity has greatly impacted public health, which the government could not afford to ignore.
Leather milk, substandard milk powder, illegal cooking oil exposed in recent years. It’s greatly influence our live.
There are a couple of driving forces, I would argue, behind this undesirable tide. First, in the course of the rapid economic evolution, we ignore moral education, giving rise to the rising rate of the problem. More importantly, the lack of adequate regulation and punishment on those illegal producers enforces the trend.
In fact, the poisonous food associated with Japan. In China, a variety of pesticides, antibiotics, antibiotics are from Japan. In a manner of speaking, the problem of Chinese food should be attributed to Japan.
In 1990s, Japanese companies were optimistic about China's cheap labor and the huge market potential. And then the Japanese companies have entered China with the tide of reform and opening up. In 1980s, Japan began to surge in China's pesticide export. In 1984, export volume had reached 26.5 billion yen. It’s irresponsible that Japanese companies take pesticides and antibiotics to China. In addition, Japan did not give a detailed description of the pesticides.
Our country also make a list of healthy food additives and some law about it. However, many food manufacturers do not obey it and use lots of illegal food additives .These food additives are harmful to our body .For example, sanlu milk powder is added in illegal chemicals. If babies eat it, they will get gallstone disease. Another hot button is illegal cooking oil. Many restaurants use the illegal cooking oil to reduce the cost so they can get more profits .However, the illegal cooking oil contains a large of chemicals that will cause cancer .So it is very terrible.
I observe that profits drive many food producers to commit illegal things. They aim to gain more money at the expense of consumers’ health. Second, the overuse of agricultural pesticide has resulted in the degradation of food quality. The excessive pesticide bears enormous health hazard for people. Furthermore, some food producers inject hormones into domestic animals so as to make them grow more quickly and thus they can turn in more profit. As a result, people’s health has been seriously disturbed. Though many other countries, even countries like the U.S. and Japan, have also experienced food safety crises in some periods of their development, maybe none of them has witnessed food safety problems on such a large scale and during such a long period of time. Actually, problematic food products had been with us for quite a long time before we realized them and almost no single food or even drink can be claimed absolutely safe. Flours may contain too much chemicals like brightener that can turn them into the desirable color; meat might have been produced by animals that have consumed chemicals to add to the red part of meat; vegetables may have too much remnants of pesticides on their leaves; even milk and other beverages may have in them poisonous chemicals to make them smell flagrant and tasty.
There is no denying the fact that food safety is a grave problem with which this country is confronted. A joke goes that everyone who can survive in China can
survive in any other part of the world, which means that the test one faces in China in terms of food safety is the gravest in the world. The most notable instance might be the notorious San Lu milk powder scandal which has drawn considerable publicity in the past months. Causing kidney stones among thousands of infants and deaths of some of them, the milk powder containing overdose melamine is but one example of numerous substandard food products in this country. While blaming those wrongdoers and sympathizing those victims, we must examine the fundamental causes of the problem and work out effective solutions.
Why are substandard food products so rampant in China? Poor supervision and law enforcement might be the leading reason. Actually, we do have such departments as the bureau of food safety supervision and administration and the bureau of industry and commerce in various levels of the government, but are they really functioning or fulfilling their duties? The answer is most possibly no. We do not have to go to factories or markets to check their performance.
We only need to go and have a look at those restaurants to know that those bureaus are not working. I believe that every one of us has noticed that tableware is not properly sanitized in some restaurants but no one says or does anything about that phenomenon.
Truly, some will condemn those manufacturers as immoral and profit-hunting, but it is nothing to blame for an enterprise to go after returns within the limit of law and almost all companies will take the risk if the cost of producing substandard food is as low as it used to be.
We needn’t go far to see the disastrous consequences of the food safety crisis. Not only are people’s health and lives directly threatened, but tremendous amounts of resources are wasted. The thousands of tons of milk powder burned to ashes is a case in point. Furthermore, an atmosphere of dishonesty and disbelief will permeate the entire society, which will not only hinder the development of economy but will ruin the nation spiritually.
Therefore, it is high time that pertinent laws and regulations were worked out and rigidly enforced to crack down on any production and circulation of substandard food products. Meanwhile, inactive and incompetent civil servants should be immediately purged from the team of food safety supervision and administration. Only with these measures taken can we expect a bright future of this nation.
Hopefully you already know that dolphins are not fish. Dolphins are warm blooded mammals like us. They breath air through a nostril on the top of their heads called a blowhole. Because dolphins breath air, they must surface periodically. Fish, however, breath by using gills underwater, and therefore do not need to surface. Many fish also have scales, which dolphins do not have. Instead, the skin of a dolphin feels rubbery. A layer of fat, called blubber, under their skin keeps them warm. The locomotion of fish and dolphins is also different. Fish swim by moving their tails from side to side (horizontally). However, dolphins swim by moving their tails up and down (vertically).
How many kinds of dolphins are there?
This question will probably never be answered correctly. As humans, we want to put everything we know of into a group. Some people like large groups with some variation and others like small, precise groups. Not everyone agrees about what marine dolphins deserve their own species name and what ones do not. I currently have 32 species of marine dolphins listed. I am pretty sure that this covers all the species accurately. Most people agree that there are six species of porpoises and five species of river dolphins
Dolphins can understand and interpret some words and actions, they cannot understand us word for word like in the TV show. Even though dolphins may not understand us completely, they might have their own languages. In fact, many people believe that dolphins communicate with languages.
Friendship
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I am honored to be standing here to deliver a speech entitled “Friendship”.
The hero’s mother in the movie Forrest Gump says, “Life is a box of chocolates”. I would say that life, with friendship, true friendship particularly, is sweet as honey. It is moonlight cast on the tranquility of a lake on a mid-fall night, enchanting to the soul. It is morning dew on rose petals, pleasant and pleasing to the sense of sight. It is cosy fire on a bitterly cold winter night, warming the heart.
But as Helen Foster Snow remarks, “Friendship is no common weed that grows along the way. It’s highly cultivated and watered day by day.” Like an infant, it needs constant care; like a young tree, it can not be left to the tender mercies of severe weather. True friendship consists more in “a friend in need” to give to than “a friend in need” to take from. A true friend is a person who can be turned to, who is ready to lend a listening ear, who is willing to share feelings.
Friendship should be mutual, otherwise it will be subject to withering like plant in drought. Like genuine love, true friendship has to be a two way experience. Be it the former or the latter, if one expects to be solely on the receiving end, then s/he will be too optimistic about it: it is hoping against hope that it will last. Love or friendship of this kind is dangerous, as it is contaminated by the dark matter in human nature – selfishness.
Not infrequently does friendship need to be cared and tended, fostered and nourished, so that it will “stand at every crossroad, so good and strong and true”.

I appreciate your president having made me an honorary visiting professor, and I will assure you that my first lecture will be very brief.
I am delighted to be here and I'm particularly delighted to be here on this occasion.
We meet at a college noted for knowledge, in a city noted for progress, in a state noted for strength, and we stand in need of all three, for we meet in an hour of change and challenge, in a decade of hope and fear, in an age of both knowledge and ignorance. The greater our knowledge increases, the greater our ignorance unfolds.
Despite the striking fact that most of the scientists that the world has ever known are alive and working today, despite the fact that this Nation's own scientific manpower is doubling every 12 years in a rate of growth more than three times that of our population as a whole, despite that, the vast stretches of the unknown and the unanswered and the unfinished still far outstrip our collective comprehension.
No man can fully grasp how far and how fast we have come, but condense, if you will, the 50,000 years of man's recorded history in a time span of but a half-century. Stated in these terms, we know very little about the first 40 years, except at the end of them advanced man had learned to use the skins of animals to cover them. Then about 10 years ago, under this standard, man emerged from his caves to construct other kinds of shelter. Only five years ago man learned to write and use a cart with wheels. Christianity began less than two years ago. The printing press came this year, and then less than two months ago, during this whole 50-year span of human history, the steam engine provided a new source of power. Newton explored the meaning of gravity. Last month electric lights and telephones and automobiles and airplanes became available. Only last week did we develop penicillin and television and nuclear power, and now if America's new spacecraft succeeds in reaching Venus, we will have literally reached the stars before midnight tonight.
This is a breathtaking pace, and such a pace cannot help but create new ills as it dispels old, new ignorance, new problems, new dangers. Surely the opening vistas of space promise high costs and hardships, as well as high reward.
So it is not surprising that some would have us stay where we are a little longer to rest, to wait. But this city of Houston, this state of Texas, this country of the United States was not built by those who waited and rested and wished to look behind them. This country was conquered by those who moved forward--and so will space.
William Bradford, speaking in 1630 of the founding of the Plymouth Bay Colony, said that all great and honorable actions are accompanied with great difficulties, and both must be enterprised and overcome with answerable courage.
If this capsule history of our progress teaches us anything, it is that man, in his quest for knowledge and progress, is determined and cannot be deterred. The exploration of space will go ahead, whether we join in it or not, and it is one of the great adventures of all time, and no nation which expects to be the leader of other nations can expect to stay behind in this race for space.
Those who came before us made certain that this country rode the first waves of the industrial revolution, the first waves of modern invention, and the first wave of nuclear power, and this generation does not intend to founder in the backwash of the coming age of space. We mean to be a part of it--we mean to lead it. For the eyes of the world now look into space, to the moon and to the planets beyond, and we have vowed that we shall not see it governed by a hostile flag of conquest, but by a banner of freedom and peace. We have vowed that we shall not see space filled with weapons of mass destruction, but with instruments of knowledge and understanding.

And I am just so glad that all could join us today. And I want to thank Wakefield for being such an outstanding host. Give yourselves a big round of applause. (Applause.)I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now -- (applause) -- with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived overseas. I lived in Indonesia for a few years. And my mother, she didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.Now, as you might imagine, I wasn’t too happy about getting up that early. And a lot of times, I’d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I’d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and she’d say, “This is no picnic for me either, buster.” (Laughter.)So I know that some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I’m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what’s expected of all of you in this new school year.But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world -- and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. That’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide.
I was so excited when i entered the college. For so many years, I workedhard to achieve this dream and finally i made it. Everything seemed fresh andcurious to me. I was so pleased that I would enjoy my college life soon.
when i was in high school, I had to study all the time and hardly had sparetime to do what i wanted to.Besides, I had to focus on my textbooks and doingexercise again and again. Therefore, I had little time to read magazines andnovels and watch TV. what was worse, I couldn't play with my friends a lot,which I couldn't stand the most. In a word, all i did in high shool should beconsidered for the College Entrance Examination.
However, my college life is totally different from the life in highschool.I can arrange my time freely. I spend most of my time reading in thelibrary, where I can open my eyes and broaden my mind.In my free time, I alsojoin some clubs,where i can make a lot of friends of different majors. Myteachers in college are so kind and knowledgeable that they not only teach usknowledge but also how to be a person and how to get on with others. Inaddition, there are more opportunities for me to improve myself.
I believe college life is an important stage in my life. In college, i canlearn how to learn by myself, how to get on with others, how to liveindependently.College provides me with a stage where i can show myself and bemyself.

Today on 15th August 20xx India is celebrating its 67th Independence Day, and we Indians are proud to say we have owned our freedom 67 years old back. As we gather here today I take the opportunity to congratulate every student and teacher of this School/college a Happy Independence Day! I also take the opportunity of welcoming you our chief guest for today!
We have assembled here to celebrate our 67th Independence Day. As a citizen of India, I am so proud to talk to you about my mother India. On the night of August 14, 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru rose to make a maiden speech in New Delhi, “When the world sleeps, India will wake to life and freedom.” Yes, India became free from the bondage of British rule. Now, India is the largest democratic country in the world. The country’s strength is to find, “Unity in diversity”. But, there are stray incidents that test her secularism but the people of India are ready to sacrifice anything for the cause of unity. Today we remember the great leaders who gave their lives for the nation’s freedom and prosperity. Dr. B.R.Ambedkar gave the longest written constitution to us. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru worked for an industrialized India. Gandhi Ji taught us Ahimsa and Non-violence. Subash Chandra Bose inducted courage in us. Swami Vivekanand gave us spiritual power. Yes, with these contributions; India will be the super power in the coming years. Our former President Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam called the children of India to dream to build a strong Nation with aim and perseverance. Indeed! This is not a word of a single man. It is word of one billionsouls.
